What: Patty Cheng in “Hard Returns: 9 Experiments for this Moment - In collaboration with veterinary pathologist Aleksija Neimanis, feminist cultural theorist Astrida Neimanis, and composer Anne Bourne, performance artist Patty Chang presents a participatory, immersive environment that is grounded in a larger research project, Learning Endings. What: The Martins family lives quietly on the outskirts of a large Brazilian city after the disappointing inauguration of an extremist far-right president. As a lower-middle-class black family, they feel the strain of their new reality. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she is cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all his hopes in the career of his son, Deivinho, who, under pressure and wanting to please his father, follows his father's ambitions, even though he secretly aspires to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, the eldest daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and wonders if it is time to leave home.
