The Symphony Orchestra's Picture-Perfect Premiere

On Sept. 27, the SUNY Purchase Symphony began their 2024-2025 concert season. The concert was directed and conducted by instrumental performance assistant professor, Mina Kim.


The show began at 7:30 p.m. and was split into two 45-minute acts with a 15-minute intermission.


The first act consisted of three songs including “Academic Festival Overture” by Johannes Braums, “Echoes Made” by graduate student Drew Sennett and “Ah! Perfido Op. 65” by Ludwig van Beethoven. The final piece of the first act featured Rachel Schlesinger, a soprano opera soloist.


The second act was a 40-minute symphony composed of five movements called “Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major, Op. 97, ‘RHENISH’” by Robert Schumann. 


Contrabassist, Christopher Wygonik, prepared onstage prior to the beginning of the show.


Freshman violinist, Nadim Selesnick, practiced onstage as the audience entered the auditorium.


Alexander Kapopoulos, bassist, prepared his instrument for the first act while being one of the closest players to the audience.


 Christina Shari (left) and Nicholas Trevits (right) opened the orchestra’s performance as the masters of ceremony, introducing the pieces in the first act.


Concertmaster of the first act, Mekhi Noble, led the string section in tuning their instruments prior to their first piece.


Orchestra director and conductor, Mina Kim, made her entrance to begin conducting the orchestra in playing “Academic Festival Overture."


The SUNY Purchase orchestra bowed after their first piece.


Scarlette Hashimoto, sight read her sheet music prior to playing the second piece of the concert.


Graduate student, Drew Sennett, entered the stage after the orchestra performed the world premiere of his new piece, “Echoes Made.”


Rachel Schlesinger, concert opera soprano, prepared to sing “Ah! Perfido, Op. 65” with the orchestra.


Principal oboist, Hank McPhillips, held his oboe in two pieces.


Principal clarinetist, Alba Morales-Millan, prepared the reed on her clarinet on stage during intermission.


Cellists: Hannah Walker (left) and Frida Rahmani (right) tuned with each other prior to their final piece.


Concertmaster of the second act, Jade Hattori-Hamilton, played her violin during the final symphony.


Conductor of the orchestra, Mina Kim, took her final bow.
